The UVic Writer's Guide

A Work By A Single Author

This is the simplest and most common citation. If your list of "Works Cited" has only one work by the author, the author's surname will identify the work:

(Melville 94)

If, however, your "Works Cited" includes two authors with the same surname, more information will be needed:

(Frye, N 101)

Notice that surname comes first, in the same way that the work will be listed in the "Works Cited."

If your sentence in some way makes clear the name of the work, only the page number (or equivalent) need be given.
