Doubling Of Consonants
Before a suffix which begins with a vowel (e.g.. -ing), the final consonant is doubled:
- If a single short vowel precedes the final consonant
(pop/popping)
- If the syllable preceding the suffix is stressed
(admit/admitted).
Otherwise, the suffix is added without any change (edit/edited, benefit/benefited).
