Short Quotations Of Verse

Short quotations of verse which consist of more than one line should retain the punctuation and capitalization of the original, and indicate any line breaks with a slash ("/").

In order to satisfy his personal needs, Aeneas "dawdles in Carthage now / And takes no thought for cities assigned by fate."

Remember, however, to treat a quotation of more than three lines of verse as a long quotation and to set it off from the rest of the text; sometimes even shorter passages are better set off, especially in some modern poetry where the actual appearance of the lines is important
